A study by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) revealed that Singapore must continue to open its doors to foreign professionals. However, the Republic must exercise some prudence in its selection process moving forward, said the think tank. This is the Selective Immigration framework adopted by Singapore and instead of working on their profiles, Permanent Residency hopefuls are discouraged by naysayers and further deterred by myths that spread like wildfire in forums/through taxi rides etc.
We aim to debunk those myths.
Applicants from India will never achieve Permanent Residency status in Singapore
Take a look at the SmartNation initiative in Singapore, where are we headed? Technology – Big Data, IoT, automation, AI, Digitalization on top of the common others like general Information Technology etc. Many would ask:” Why are individuals from India at the forefront of consideration again? Why not the Chinese or other nationalities for that matter?” One thing for sure, as we pit two world’s most populous countries against each other, is that college-educated Indians tend to speak good/much better English and are comfortable with American business culture. This is on top of being extremely savvy in Technology – it has become a societal norm for an individual to be learned in the field. We simply cannot help but notice that many large Fortune 500 tech companies are helmed by Indians – think Sundar Pichai (Google), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), Shantanu Narayen (Adobe) and Ajay Banga (MasterCard) who is also the co-founder of The Cyber Readiness Institute, a founding trustee of the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum and served on a cybersecurity commission under former U.S. President Barack Obama. We do have to keep in mind that times will progressively change – other nationalities playing catch up in the Technology sector but it remains as it is for now.
Singapore will NEVER approve applicants for Permanent Residency anymore or they have lowered their rate of approval till a point nobody should even bother
Let the graph speak for itself.
We have seen a gradual and encouraging increase in the number of approved applicants for Permanent Residency since 2014 – which was since 6 years ago! Now, what we should be expecting will be the number to hover in the 30,000 to 32,000 range on a yearly basis as this is the “magic” number as per the number of Permanent Residents in Singapore as compared to Singapore citizens. The other factors influencing this number shall be the fertility, mortality rate of the population etc.
Supporting documents are full of hot air – none of them matter
Imagine a client who submitted his application through professionals like us together with almost 20 others in his office, of which almost all have similar profiles e.g. salary, job designation, years of stay and work in Singapore etc. Gradually, all got rejected except him. We would also love to attribute it to coincidence but we simply are unable to. What stood out? The supporting documents and how his profile was presented in a holistic way to the reviewing authorities. An applicant who was rejected three times prior had his family application submitted professionally and the only difference was the presence of the supporting documents clearly outlining his case/profile. He received his approval after 8 months. The list goes on and we will definitely have a chance at the Powerball if it all boils down to coincidence.
To be a Permanent Resident in Singapore is no easy feat but most importantly one must understand the truths instead of being swayed the wrong way by the myths surrounding it.
